Tropical Storm Leon (international name: Kong-rey) maintained its strength as it slowed down over the Philippine Sea, it will affect the Visayas as well as several areas in Luzon and Mindanao on Monday according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
The state weather bureau said Leon was located some 40 kilometers east of Central Luzon, moving westward at 10 kilometers per hour, packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near its center and a gustiness of up to 105 kph.
Pagasa said Leon’s trough is bringing scattered rain and thunderstorms to Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Bicol, Visayas, Zamboanga del Norte, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands.
As of October 28 (Monday), Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was raised over the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Baggao, Santa Teresita, Gonzaga, Peñablanca); the eastern portion of Isabela (Maconacon, Divilacan, Ilagan City, San Pablo, Cabagan, Tumauini, Palanan, San Mariano, Dinapigue); and the northeastern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga) due to Tropical Storm Leon.
On Pagasa’s forecast, Leon will move westward for the next 12 hours before turning west northward tomorrow (October 29) early morning. Considering the current movement, a further westward shift in forecast track is not ruled out. Afterwards, this tropical cyclone may turn northwestward by Wednesday (October 30) until Thursday (October 31).
It added that Leon may make landfall over Taiwan by Friday (November 1) early morning before turning north northeastward towards the East China Sea. On the track forecast, Leon may pass closely over Batanes area by Wednesday or Thursday.
“It is expected to gradually intensify in the next 24 hours and may reach severe tropical storm category by this afternoon. This tropical cyclone may also undergo rapid intensification.”
