Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Romando Artes said that the government is considering the removal of EDSA bus lane to “free up space” in the major thoroughfare.
The MMDA chief said removing the EDSA bus lane is still a suggestion, noting that it will not happen unless the MRT's carrying capacity is improved. Adding that the DOTr are expanding the carrying capacity of the MRT.
The DOTr plans to have a “seamless transfer from different train system” by linking the MRT to the Light Rail Transit (LRT).
“They say they will add one more train car, so that’s another 30 percent additional. The infrastructure is just being fixed to accommodate the longer train car. If the passengers can be accommodated at the top, on the train, we don’t see the need to have a bus because it’s exactly the same route. In fact, the train is more advantageous because it has more stops than the bus carousel,” Artes said.
He also mentioned that the EDSA will undergo rehabilitation to improve the riding quality of the major thoroughfare in the country’s metropolis. And they are doing a timetable and a preliminary traffic management plan for the rehabilitation of EDSA.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manny Bonoan earlier said the Philippine government would undertake major infrastructure projects this year, including the complete rehabilitation of EDSA.
Artes said the EDSA repair in March will push through. The rehabilitation project aims to address long-standing issues with the highway as well as enhance the overall commuting experience for millions of Filipinos.
