Nine suspects allegedly involved in voice phishing were arrested by Cyber Response Unit of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) in General Trias Cavite. In the investigation of the PNP-Anti Cybercrime group, the group started operating in 2021, their monthly income reaches 5 million pesos.
Mobile phones and registered sims allegedly used in voice phishing were recovered from the suspects. Bulk bank documents were also found in the raided area by the suspects and this is where the number of their victim is taken.
In this modus operandi, the suspects will call the victim on the phone while pretending to be from the bank and claim to be able to convert their credit card points into cash. In order to do that, it is necessary to provide the one-time pin (OTP) that the bank will send to them, but this pin is the key to access and clear the balance of the bank account of the person being called.
According to the PNP, it is possible that the suspects had an accomplice inside the bank, and the arrested suspects are part of a big syndicate and there are people higher than them that will continue to looked for.
"This information is bank information, so the question is, how did the suspects acquire it."
"The PNP-ACG needs the cooperation of financial institutions in the investigation to strengthen the evidence, prepare for filing the case, and expedite the process. The PNP-ACG will also reach out to the victims identified in the gathered evidence to assist them in filing a complaint."
The Philippine National Police (PNP) will file a complaint for violation of the Access Devices Regulation Act against those caught. The public is reminded not to answer or give any information from unknown persons.
