A passenger at the Davao International Airport was arrested after making a bomb joke, the 42-year-old man is now in the custody of the Police Station after joking that he was carrying a bomb inside the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City.
According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group, the man was a passenger on a flight to Singapore. When he was asked what’s inside of his luggage were, the passenger replied that there was nothing fragile or breakable in the luggage because it was said to contain only bombs.
The Davao International Airport Police immediately responded to the call of the customer service agent of the Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions, Inc. related to the bomb joke of the said passenger at the check-in counter of the airport.
Airport authorities arrested the passenger and took him to the police station. According to authorities, the suspect was charged with violation of Presidential Decree 1727 at the Davao Prosecutor's Office. Individuals who bomb jokes in airports will face up to five years in prison and a P40,000 fine.
The bill states that, “It may be a joke, but a bomb joke is no laughing matter. Bomb jokes have brought undue inconveniences to the public. Some caused the delay or suspension of flights and ship travels; and some disrupted schools and workplaces. Such disturbances to the normal activities of the people not only cause panic and anxiety but also take a toll on their economic productivity.”
On the same incident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 last week, an unidentified woman called stating bomb threat causing five hours delayed on flights and evacuating passengers and undergoing security checks.
The Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco emphasized, “Bomb jokes or any comments referencing explosives are not taken lightly, especially in sensitive environments like airports. Such actions can be construed as threats and may lead to exclusion or deportation if foreign nationals are involved.”
