Pinoy classic dish Tortang Talong has been recognized as the second-best egg dish in the world by an experiential travel online guide TasteAtlas.
As seen on the publication’s website, the well-loved Filipino dish received a 4.4 out 5 rating. It is one of six dishes in the food guide's 100 list of best egg dishes behind the Japanese egg dish Ajitsuke tamago, which also had 4.4 stars.
The Filipino eggplant dish tortang talong (eggplant omelet) was describes as a “simple Filipino dish made with a combination of roasted eggplants and lightly beaten eggs” that resembles a crispy omelette by TasteAtlas.
They also called the dish a versatile delicacy and said it was best served with steamed rice, and tomato or banana ketchup. “Inexpensive and quickly prepared, tortang talong can be enjoyed at any time of day as a hearty breakfast, lunch, or dinner.”
Meanwhile, Japan's ajitsuke tamago grabbed the first spot, followed by the Philippines' tortang talong; staka me ayga of Chania, Greece; strapasada of Greece; and Turkey's ispanakh yumurta.
On the sixth to 10th spot are tortilla de betanzos of Betanzos in Spain; the famous eggs benedict from the US; chawanmushi of Japan; shakshouka of Tunisia; and Menemen of Izmir Province, Turkey.
The travel and food guide also gave a recommendation “where to eat the best tortang talong in the world according to food experts” including naming Sarsa Kitchen and Bar in Makati City, La Preciosa Restaurant in Laoag, Ilocos Norte and LZM Restaurant in Tagaytay, among others.
According to TasteAtlas "Torta is a popular Filipino dish consisting of an omelet filled with ground meat and vegetables such as diced potatoes. Savory and extremely satisfying, the dish is usually served as a main course, preferably over rice.”
"There are numerous variations on the Filipino torta, such as tortang talong (eggplant omelet) and tortang gulay (onion, bell peppers and garlic omelet). The reason for the unusual name of this dish is a strong Spanish influence in the Philippines,” it added.
