MANILA, Philippines — Former President Rodrigo Duterte's legal struggle has intensified after his partner, Honeylet Avanceña, is now facing possible assault charges for reportedly using a cellphone to strike a police officer during a heated confrontation at Villamor Air Base on Tuesday. After an arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), officials were getting ready to fly Duterte to The Hague, Netherlands, when the altercation broke out.
The injured officer, a female member of the elite Special Action Force (SAF), had a head injury, according to Philippine National Police (PNP) Spokesman Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo.
"The officer who sustained a head injury will be filing a direct assault case," Fajardo said during a media briefing on Thursday.
However, she pointed out that because the cop had just been released from an unidentified hospital, the case's chronology was still unclear.
As police attempted to arrest Duterte and accompany him on a plane to Europe, tensions increased. When things got out of hand, Avanceña and their daughter, Veronica, were at Villamor Air Base.
"We have video evidence showing Miss Honeylet striking one of our female officers, who was tasked with keeping the area clear," Fajardo revealed. "The officer suffered a swollen head and required medical attention."
