On Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines  (CAAP) announced that they are collaborating closely with airlines to raise awareness about the carrying of dangerous items on airplanes, such as power banks.

Airlines are part of the project, providing passengers with information and training on how to handle hazardous materials safely.

The action aims to allay worries about recent aviation disasters in which it was suspected that power banks were the cause of an aircraft fire.

Despite being exceptional instances, such incidences served as a reminder of the significance of following aviation safety standards, according to Captain James Conner, head of CAAP's Flight Operations Department.

To avoid such occurrences, travelers must adhere closely to airline-mandated safety procedures, Conner stated.

Because of the possibility of overheating and possible fire hazards, power banks—which are categorized as portable lithium-ion battery devices—are absolutely forbidden in checked baggage under CAAP standards.

Subject to the following limitations, passengers are allowed to bring power banks in their hand-carried luggage: power banks up to 100Wh (watt-hours) are allowed on flights without prior authorization; power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval before being allowed on flights; and power banks larger than 160Wh are strictly forbidden.

To prevent disruption, travelers are encouraged to verify the capacity of their power banks and adhere to airline regulations.

For example, from March 1, Taiwan's Eva Air has prohibited the usage and charging of power banks and replacement lithium batteries while in flight.

However, Korean-owned airlines prohibited e-cigarettes and power banks from being placed in overhead bins.
