On Saturday, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced that five Chinese nationals were arrested for engaging in illicit mining in the province of Isabela.
According to a news statement, Xue Xianrong, Xingyue Qiu, Zeng Shuiying, Zhang Huaping, and Xue Junfeng were arrested on February 27 as they were employed at a mining site in Barangay Caguilingan, Cordon.
The BI Regional Intelligence Operating Unit II conducted the operation and discovered that the five were operating without the required licenses or authorization.
Except for digital copies of their passports on their phones, the foreign nationals did not have proper immigration documents when they were inspected.
Subsequent investigation revealed that they did not possess the appropriate work permits.
In a statement, BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado declared, "This is a blatant violation of our immigration laws."
“Foreign nationals who wish to work in the Philippines must secure the proper documentation. We will not tolerate any disregard for our laws, especially in industries that pose environmental and economic concerns.”
In order to await deportation proceedings, the five Chinese nationals were moved to the BI holding facility in Bicutan, Taguig.
“We urge all foreign workers to comply with our immigration policies. Those who continue to work illegally will be dealt with accordingly,” -Viado.
