VOTER REGISTRATION FOR 2025 ELECTIONS ENDS TODAY – COMELEC

Applicants flock to different Comelec offices a to register on the last day of voter registration for the 2025 national and local elections today, September 30, 2024. Comelec Chairman George Garcia announced that there will be no extensions for local and overseas voter registration.

Garcia reiterated that they could not extend the deadline for voter registration because the Election Registration Board still needs to evaluate the applications and o as not to jeopardize ongoing preparations for the May 12 polls.

"No more extension. We have already provided enough time; otherwise, it will affect our timeline," Garcia said.

Meanwhile, voter registration period in some areas in Northern Luzon may be extended due to the effects of Typhoon “Julian.” And f needed, for instance, the period could be extended up to October 1, but it will coincide with the start of the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) which will run until October 8.

“Today marks the end of the voter registration period. Although we said we wouldn't extend it, due to the current situation affecting the people of Northern Luzon, we've given regional offices the discretion to decide whether to continue or reset the registration for another day,” Garcia stated. 

For the Bangsamoro elections, the period for the filing of COCs was moved to November 4 to November 9, 2024 following the exclusion of Sulu from the autonomous region.

Earlier, the Comelec confirmed that they have reached the target of 3 million new voters for the upcoming election. As of September 17, around 6,442,112 registrations had been processed for the 2025 national and local elections. Meanwhile, 5,376,630 voters were deactivated and a total of 714,152 voters were deleted from the official voter list.

1.18 million applications from overseas Filipinos were recorded, which was expected to reach 1.486 million. Garcia said there were 66 million registered voters, although the Comelec projects 70 million to 71 million voters in 2025.
