Some private schools are calling for hike up to 12% of tuition for the upcoming school year, a group of parents are asking not to maximize the tuition hike.

"Main reasons for the tuition fee increase is of course the inflation, because the cost of operations of schools is going up, like utilities and basic commodities," Atty. Kristine Manaog Legal Counsel of COCOPEA stated.

“To respond to the inflation and the difficulty, economic difficulties being experienced by our parents, we cannot help but also apply for tuition increase ranging from 3% to 9%, 12%,” said COCOPEA chairman Fr. Albert Delvo.

The Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations of the Philippines (COCOPEA) has announced it proposed 3-12% tuition increase for private schools. Pre-pandemic when private schools last raise the tuition, many of which closed during the pandemic due to losses.

"Now the first impression is too big, but that's the range not all schools will be implementing a 12% increase. Each school has its own needs, so it depends on their needs," Manaog added.

The group explained that a large part of the increase will go to the salaries of teachers and employees, while the rest will be used to finance the operation of the school.

The Parent Association of the Philippines, although it understands what is going on inside the schools, appeals not to push the proposed tuition hike.

As for the assistance to students in private schools, the Expanded Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (E-GASTPE) proposal has been passed in the chamber.

The Commission on Higher Education stated it has not yet discussed a tuition price increase in the Commission en Banc, while the Department of Education is gathering data regarding the schools that submitted applications for tuition fee increases.
