“Don’t forget the true symbol of Holy Week”, that’s what the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) reminded the Catholics. According to Executive Secretary of CBCP Permanent Committee on Public Affairs Fr. Jerome Secillano, Catholics should take advantage of the precious days to pray and meditate to get closer to the Lord.
At the same time, Father said that Catholics should also remember the sacrifice made by the Lord to save mankind from certain disaster.
“The idea is that there is a Holy Week so that people can give more attention and focus on the relationship with the Lord. Let's just imagine in our lives that there is a God who made a way to save us from certain destruction. Because eternal damnation is a bit theological, that's true but God has made a way so that at least you won't end up in certain destruction, I hope our conscience is still working.”
Meanwhile, in observance with the Holy Week it is stated under the Executive Order (EO) No. 9 Series of 2024 signed by Manila mayor Honey Lacuna, the city government of Metro Manila will implement a liquor ban starting on Maundy Thursday until Good Friday. The city will ban the sale and consumption of alcohol within the 500-meter radius of all Catholic Churches.
It is also on another directive, EO No. 8 Series of 2024, signed by Lacuna, “To provide Manileños the full opportunity to properly observe Semana Santa when families gather together for special meals, go to church for Easter vigils and mass, renew and recollect on their faith, spend time with their fellow religious and show their devotion to the Catholic Church, it is proper to give them enough time to prepare for the events leading to the observance and remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,” half-day classes at all levels for public and private schools and half-day work for city government employees on Holy Wednesday was declared.
