A minor phreatomagmatic eruption was observed at Taal Volcano in Batangas province early Tuesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma interacts with water and produces plumes of steam, ash and other volcanic materials. PHIVOLCS said, the Taal Volcano generated a 2800-meter grayish plume at 05:58 a.m.
Two volcanic tremors that lasted four minutes long were also recorded at Taal Volcano.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) also reported that “A steam-driven or phreatic eruption occurred at Taal Volcano towards the southwest direction at 5:58 a.m.”
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also notified the public through short message service or SMS, advising them to wait for the next advisories.
It also emitted a moderate 600-meter-tall plume, which drifted southwest. On November 30, it also released a 7,216 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux.
Alert Level 1 is still hoisted over Taal volcano; under alert level 1, entry into the Taal Volcano Island is banned and aircraft are prohibited from flying close to the volcano. More steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, and minor ashfall are also possible.
