Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the start of the summer season. Because of that according to Dr. Nathaniel Servando Administrator of PAGASA, expect warmer weather due to the effects of El Niño.
“We officially declare the start of the Philippine summer. With the effect of El Niño, which is expected to continue, we expect above temperatures and even drier condition during the months of April and May in particular. “
This year's summer can also be considered the warmest and driest. It is expected to feel the hottest weather by the month of May.
"We could get as high as 40C there in parts of the Cagayan Valley Region” - Ana Liza Solis OIC Climatology and Agrometeorology Division PAGASA.
According to Marcelino Villafuerte Head Impact Assessment and Applications Section PAGASA, "The month of May is even higher, reaching danger level and extreme danger level. The extreme danger is 52 and above degree Celsius of heat index.”
Yesterday the heat index reached 42C in Cotabato city while Metro Manila experienced 32C. Meanwhile, aside from El Nino, PAGASA is also monitoring the effects of La Niña or the unusually long rainy season.
But right now, there is only a 60% chance of this happening by the month of July.
