There are up to 63,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in South Korea who are experiencing extreme heat. Last week, the temperature reached 40°C, and heat related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke have reached 500 in which five have died.
The Embassy released an advisory for Filipinos in South Korea, “A heatwave is an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year, which may be accompanied by high humidity.”
"Because their projection is about a ten-day heat wave, unusually high temperatures." Philippine Embassy in South Korea Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega said.
Based on the monitoring of the Philippine Embassy in South Korea, no Filipinos have been recorded as being affected by the heat wave, but they are also reminding Filipinos to take care, especially those working in open areas.
“Drink plenty of water, go to a cool place when you feel nausea, dizziness, or headache, and constantly check the news for heatwave warnings or updates are among the ways our community can keep safe during the heatwave,” the advisory reads.
Aside from drinking water and using sunscreen, Filipinos are also advised to monitor the weather. Some were also advised to have strategic timing when leaving the house or office. "A mixture of humidity, the heat, the sun's rays which are very hot and there is not much wind or breeze. So, it's important, if you don’t have to go out, stay only inside the office or home."
According to international news reports citing the Korean Interior Ministry, the nationwide heat wave has caused medical conditions for over a thousand people. Weather conditions have also claimed the lives of nearly 257,000 livestock.
The heat is felt in a large part of Korea, but it is said to be doubly careful in parts of Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do province where the heat is more intense.
