The Taal Volcano increased sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions resulting in volcanic smog according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), affecting nearby towns in Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna.
According to its 8AM bulletin, the agency recorded 3,355 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and observed a volcanic smog and an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake. Vog is a volcanic smog consisting of "fine droplets containing volcanic gas such as sulfur dioxide, which is acidic and can cause irritation of the eyes, throat and respiratory tract with severities depending on the gas concentrations and durations of exposure."
Alert Level 1 remains in effect, indicating abnormal conditions and the ongoing threat of eruptive activity. With this, the agency reminded the public of the potential hazards, including steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and volcanic gas exposure. Entry into the Permanent Danger Zone and Taal Volcano Island is also strictly prohibited.
