In front of thousands of volleyball fans, the support was all out in the first match of Alas Pilipinas in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Alas Pilipinas first faced the tall Australian players.
In the first set, Australia got the point, in the following sets, Alas came up with its strongest sets provided by the team captain, Jia Morado De Guzman, and Sisi Rondina is one leading the offense. The momentum continued until the Philippines won the next two sets. Rondina hit the winning match point set by Jia.
Rondina scored 16 points, while La Salle star Angel Canino and Chery Tiggo's Eya Laure led the scoring after recording 17 points each. Filipinos can hope that Alas will do better in the next games.
On their second match against India, Pinay players are dominant despite India not giving up the game. Until Eya Laure topped the battle with a powerful hit, ending the game with a score 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, and 25-18.
"What I'm really proud of is my team because everyone was really ready to step up and we adjusted very quickly in-game. India was very challenging, a little bit more challenging than Australia because they already scouted us based on our game yesterday," Jia De Guzman said.
“Every time that we're gonna play here, I'm sure that they're gonna show something better than the day before. Even if the guys are a little bit tired, they have the specific ingredients that we need. They are really committed to play,” Alas Pilipinas women head coach Jorge Souza De Brito said.
“We're going to start the same players. But we need to do the changes. We need to move. It's important to play a competition day after day just using the same guys. I'm sure that the guys that will replace them, they will be ready to play. They will do the same. The guys can be really, really good, and have a good game again,” De Brito said for the next game players arrangement.
Cheers and loud screams from the thousands of supporters drove the players as they flocked to Manila to watch the game live. When playing against more skilled opponents, the coached claimed that his players found support from the crowd.
