Today, Monday July 29, 2024, the new school year officially begin for students after President Marcos Jr. approved the move to start reverting gradually to the old school calendar. The opening of classes will proceed in most schools nationwide even some were affected by the recent typhoon and monsoon rains and flooding.

Early Monday morning, students flock to school despite the moderate to heavy rain. The weather bureau Pagasa released a thunderstorm advisory where moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds will be experienced in Zambales, Bataan, Quezon, Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, and Cavite brought by the southwest monsoon.
According to the Department of Education (DepEd), as of 7:00 a.m. this Monday, July 29, 2024 enrollment in schools nationwide has reached 19,870,531 both public and private schools, including state and local universities and colleges (SUCs/LUCs), and the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
Furthermore, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed more than 33,000 personnel in various schools across the country to secure the first of classes. According to PNP chief Police Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, police assistance desks would be put up at schools, adding that foot and mobile patrols would also be conducted around schools' premises to prevent criminal activities and ensure swift responses to incidents.
Meanwhile, the DepEd said that 832 public schools in areas affected by the impact of Super typhoon Carina across the country decided to postpone the opening of classes to allow the rehabilitation and cleanup of affected facilities.
Based on the list provided by Education Secretary Sonny Angara, majority of the postponed opening of classes were in Central Luzon followed by the Ilocos region, National Capital Region (NCR), Calabarzon, and Soccsksargen.
