Gil Tulog became a controversy when commuters saw it that used to be Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati. The renamed street sign was a marketing ploy of supplement brand Wellspring Sleepneys for their melatonin gummies has gone viral.
But the advertising campaign was not liked by Makati Mayor Abby Binay, who said that the permit to change the Gil Puyat Avenue street sign did not reach her office. She stated that it will be immediately rejected if it passed through her.
“The city officials who issued the permit should have exercised prudence. They should have been more thorough. They should have considered the confusion this could cause motorists and commuters,” said Binay.
Binay added that respect should be given to the family and memory of former Senate President Gil Puyat. The signage has already been taken down, and Wellspring has apologized to the Mayor and the Puyat family.
“It was never our intention to offend anyone in our marketing execution, which used wordplay to draw attention to the importance of sleep and how it contributes to one’s overall health,” the advertising agency said on a statement.
“We deeply apologize to the family of the late Sen. Gil Puyat for the harm and offense that the campaign has caused them. Rest assured that there was no intent to besmirch and disrespect his legacy,” it added.
Gil Puyat served as a Philippine senator from 1951 to 1973 and was Senate president for six years before passing away in 1980. The major thoroughfare in Makati was named in his honor.
The family of former Senator Gil Puyat filed a complaint against the advertisement agency that changed the street sign. According to Victor Puyat, son of former Senate President Gil Puyat, they decided to take action against the advertising agency because of the allegedly insulting move.
“Our name is not to be violated for financial, political, or other reasons,” Victor Puyat said.
The agency violated the council’s Code of Ethics which provides “advertisements shall not directly or indirectly disparage, ridicule, criticize, or attack any natural or juridical person.”
"We want Gigil Advertising Agency to be suspended or banned from your council. They have made several ads, when they have been suspended in the past,” the complaint read.
