Police security for “very important persons” or VIPs has been removed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) with its new policy, stressing that it is not the job of policemen’s.
According to PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, “When I started as Chief PNP, we changed the terms on giving Police Security and Protection Group services because it appears they are moonlighting.”
“What is stated there is VIP and it is not the job of police to give VIP protection to anybody. That's not our job. Our job is to give security to people who are threatened for their lives,” he added.
Marbil state an example, “I'm not happy about it because last time I went to a hotel, this Chinese guy had security, but I didn't. They were wearing a PSPG t-shirt. How can we do this? Worse, they were just carrying his bag.”
Marbil’s decision is firm noting that police officers should only secure individuals with validated threats. To get a police security, an individual must request in writing to the PNP and cite reasons why he or she needs protection. Then the PNP will conduct a validation to determine the veracity of the threat.
People were calling Marbil asking why he removed their security, and Marbil said it’s not their job.
The only PNP unit authorized to provide security to people with existing threats is the Police Security and Protection Group. The policy adjustment was made as he assumed leadership in the police organization.
