On the upcoming third State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that it would be suspending all permits to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR) on July 22, 2024.
The nationwide gun ban is part of the precautionary measures during the SONA to ensure public safety and security. The PTCFOR will be suspended from 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. according to the advisory of PNP Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO).
According to House Secretary General Reginald Velasco more than 2,000 people from the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations have expressed their desire to attend the SONA.
With the session hall's seating capacity limited to 2,000, the House of Representatives will add seats and open various function rooms to accommodate additional guests.
PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil said that around 22,000 police personnel will be deployed on the SONA, and if they see some threats there will be more deployment. But right now, no threats are seen, and should look at possible inconveniences.
The PNP will focus on the security measures in the vicinity of the Batasang Pambansa Complex. And the security inside the chamber is under the purview of the House Office of the Sergeant at Arms and the Presidential Security Group.
For security precaution, the Batasang Pambansa will be closed down beginning July 19, the Friday before the SONA.
