The Philippines ranks low when it comes to students' creative thinking, according to a report released by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) which assesses the creative thinking of 15-year-old youth.
PISA defines creative thinking as "the competence to engage productively in the generation, evaluation and improvement of ideas that can result in original and effective solutions, advances in knowledge and impactful expressions of imagination."
Singapore tops with a score of 41, the Philippines is second with the lowest grade. Out of 64 countries, the Philippines is in the 63rd spot with a score of 14. Uzbekistan also scored 14, while Albania scored 13, which was the lowest rank.
The creative thinking of the students was measured when answering the exams related to creative writing, visual expression, scientific and social problem solving. The ranking was obtained in the 2022 PISA exam.
According to lawmakers, the low ranking of the Philippines in PISA 2022 may also have affected the results of the ranking. It can be remembered that the Philippines has the sixth lowest score when it comes to math, reading, and science.
"Our children are not able to read and write, they score really low. We have been raising the alarm about the learning crisis right now. We've been scoring really low in international assessments, and just recently we scored very high in terms of learning poverty," a group stated on alarming learning low ranks.
In response, the Department of Education recently established the "Matatag Curriculum" under which some subjects were reduced to focus more on basic functional literacy such as reading comprehension, math, science, and good manners and right conduct.
PISA 2022 results, which were released in December 2023, revealed that Filipino students are still among the weakest in the world in math, reading, and science. The country's overall score did not significantly improve from 2018, the year it first took the exam.
