PHIVOLCS LOGS MINOR PHREATIC ERUPTION AT TAAL VOLCANO

Taal Volcano had a minor phreatic eruption on Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the minor phreatic eruption lasted four minutes.Moderate emission of plumes of up to 2,100 meters tall were observed from the volcano, which drifted to the west.

In the previous bulletin, only a weak emission of plumes reaching 900 meters were observed. Two volcanic earthquakes, including one volcanic tremor, that lasted 91 minutes were recorded over the Taal Volcano.

On Saturday, a minor phreatic eruption was also recorded that generated a 900-meter plume and lasted three minutes and 22 seconds. It also logged three volcanic tremors, which lasted from four to 12 minutes.

A long-term deflation of the Taal Caldera and a short-term inflation of the southeastern flank of the Taal Volcano Island were also observed.

Alert Level 1 is maintained over Taal Volcano, which means the volcano is in abnormal condition and should not be interpreted to have ceased unrest nor ceased the threat of eruptive activity.

Under Alert Level 1, the possible hazards are sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

PHIVOLCS prohibits the entry to the Taal Volcano Island, permanent danger zone or PDZ, especially the vicinity of the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure. Flying close to the volcano is also prohibited.
