PHILIPPINES TO STRENGHTEN COLLABORATION WITH SINGAPORE

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will be welcoming Singapore president Tharman Shanmugaratnam for its three-day state visit in the Philippines. The diplomats will hold a bilateral meeting where Marcos intends to “reaffirm the Philippine government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Singapore.”
According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), “President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos will welcome Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his spouse, Mrs. Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, as they embark on a three-day state visit to the Philippines staring August 15.”
As the two countries continue to undertake cooperation, in both bilateral and multilateral milieus, including in the fields of energy and healthcare, among others. Signing of memoranda of understanding on the recruitment of Filipino healthcare workers and collaboration on climate financing are also expected during their meeting.
About 200,000 Filipinos are estimated to live and work in Singapore, with 60% of them being professionals or skilled workers and the remaining 40% working household service.
The Philippines and Singapore diplomatic relations were formally established on May 16, 1969, and celebrated the 55th year of diplomatic ties this year. Tharman is the first Singaporean head of state to visit the Philippines in an official capacity, the last Singaporean leader to visit the Philippines was Halimah Yacob in 2019.
