In the midst of the scorching heat, the cooling towers at NAIA Terminal 3 were damaged, causing extreme heat inside the airport, so the passengers had to resort to refreshments.
There was a temporary shutdown of the two cooling towers of the airport this Saturday night, so cooling fans were immediately placed in different parts of the airport to somehow alleviate the heat.
"The cooling tower doesn't work because the other one we call the chiller doesn't work, now they have it working, there are still things to fix but, it's getting okay, the air conditioner is bearable now but it's good that we can fix it because we need to do the bearing of the cooling tower, hopefully after the day until early Tuesday morning," MIAA General Manager Eric Ines.
Right now, only four of the six cooling towers are working, because they want to strengthen them because of the extreme heat, he said it has an effect but once it is operational it will get stronger and colder, the air conditioner in terminal 3 is much cooler.
The higher heat index outside the terminal, which hit 43 degrees Celsius on Saturday, resulted in excessive power loads that kept tripping the terminal circuit breaker, according to the MIAA.
The MIAA said its “engineering team is actively addressing the situation to restore full functionality of all cooling towers as swiftly as possible. In the meantime, we seek the understanding of our passengers and stakeholders as we work through this challenge.”
The MIAA reminded the public that as much as possible, do not bring with them senior citizens and those with illnesses in drop off and pick up to avoid the effects of the hot weather.
