In a press conference on Monday, the state weather agency PAGASA said that six (6) more tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) before the end of year 2024.
Pagasa Assistant Weather Services Chief and Weather Division Officer-in-Charge Christopher Perez said during the latest PAGASA Climate Forum, two to eight cyclones were seen to enter and cross PAR during the last quarter of the year.
“Ang huli nating estimate based sa pinaka-last na forum is two to eight na tropical cyclones. Dahil nakadalawa na tayo ngayong October, likely hanggang anim ang maximum number ng tropical cyclones na inaasahan natin bago matapos ang taon,” Perez said.
(Based on the recent estimates, around two to eight tropical cyclones are expected to enter PAR. We already had two so it is likely that we may have a maximum of six more cyclones before the end of the year.)
Perez added that tropical cyclones entering during the last quarter of the year are expected to be stronger and may have an increased possibility of crossing the country’s landmass.
“As we mentioned earlier, we expect stronger storms during the last quarter of the year, with a tendency to make landfall,” he noted.
The state weather bureau explained that tropical cyclones are generally stronger during the last quarter of the year due to thick cloud formations in the tropical cyclones, as evidenced by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.
Data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that the number of reported fatalities due to Kristine has reached 116 as of October 28. At least 39 individuals were also reported missing and 109 others were reported injured.
Pagasa said that Leon may be stronger due to the presence of thick clouds in the western and southern parts of the storm’s center. So far, twelve tropical cyclones have entered PAR this year.
