After announcing that the La Niña phenomenon may be delayed, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has raised the La Niña Alert and will start forming in August.
According to the weather state bureau climate models and expert judgements, there is a 70 percent chance of La Niña forming by August-September-October 2024 season. In a bulletin released by Pagasa, the recent climate monitoring shows further cooling of the sea surface temperature across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
“Most climate models combined with expert judgments suggest a 70% chance of La Niña forming in August-September-October (ASO) 2024 season and is likely to persist until the first quarter of 2025. With this development, the DOST-PAGASA ENSO Alert and Warning System is now raised to La Niña Alert,” the Pagasa notice states.
The Pagasa then issued a warning that floods and landslides on vulnerable areas in the country may be affected of tropical cyclones and rainfall with the prevalence of La Niña.
It said that the country may experience a higher chance of increased convective activity and tropical cyclone occurrence which may bring above normal rainfall over some parts of the country in the coming months
Furthermore, the agency forecasted that the southwest monsoon or amihan will affect the southern portion of Luzon, as well as Visayas and Mindanao region. Bringing isolated rain showers and thunder with possible floods and landslides.
