The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that the northeast monsoon and shear line will bring rain to some parts of the country on Friday, December 6.
Two weather systems still influence atmospheric conditions nationwide, the shear line will be affecting the eastern section of Northern Luzon while the northeast monsoon (amihan) will affect extreme Northern Luzon.
Cagayan, Isabela, and a huge portion of the Cordillera Administrative Region will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorm due to the shear line with flash floods or landslides possibly occurring due to moderate to at times heavy rains.
While Batanes will have cloudy skies with light rains due to the northeast monsoon, but this will have no significant impact.
According to Pagasa, shear line occurs when the northeast monsoon – locally termed “amihan” – converges with easterlies or the warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean.
The rest of Northern Luzon, particularly the Ilocos Region, will experience low temperature and light rains due to the northeast monsoon.
Luzon’s central and southern portions, as well as Palawan and most parts of Visayas, especially the eastern section, will see moderate cloudy skies due to localized thunderstorms.
“Rains will be frequent in Quezon, Aurora, and in Bicol as early as this morning while Central and Southern Luzon will experience scattered rains.”
The state weather bureau reported that Palawan and a huge portion of Visayas, especially the eastern portion of Visayas, will experience moderate cloudy skies with scattered rains that usually last for one to two hours due to the localized thunderstorms in the afternoon.
For many areas in Mindanao specially in the central portion, will experience isolated rain showers or thunderstorms that usually do not last long by afternoon to evening.
According to PAGASA, by the second week of December Amihan or the cold air associated with Christmas will start to bring chillier days to Metro Manila and other areas in the country. “So over the weekend until next week, it is possible that our expected weather will be colder again, even here in Metro Manila.”
It said that a low pressure area could form next week “We are seeing tropical cyclone-like vertices. It is possible that it will become a low pressure area because by next week.” But the chance of becoming a typhoon is low. One or 2 cyclones could form around the Philippines in December.
