According to Senate Committee on Accounts Chairman Allan Peter Cayetano, the real price of the new Senate building under construction may be more expensive than first thought. In the previous committee hearing, the DPWH announced that the cost of the NSB could reach P27 billion.

Based on the new documents gathered by the committee, it appears that the value of the building reached more than P27 billion. Which is too big compared to what was initially said to be more than P21 billion.

“The P25 to 27 billion projected costs of NSB could be a little bit conservative. It’s coming out to be the most expensive building in the country so far and we will still try to remedy that," Cayetano said.

“The story is developing, this week I found out many things being hidden from us. Whoever is doing this and why, I haven't gotten to that yet but we finally received caches, a half a room full of documents and we're getting through it,” he added.

Cayetano appealed to Senator Nancy Binay, as well as the Senate Coordinating Team (SCT) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to "tell the whole truth” about the project.

"Tell the whole truth. What we're doing is the review. If they came forward and gave us everything, we would have decisions by now. They are not being forthright. That's not good because we can't evaluate the NSB well," Cayetano said.

It can be remembered that the new Senate building's construction has been postponed for more than two years. Senate President Francis Escudero issued an order in June to stop construction after discovering that the building's price had skyrocketed from P8.9 billion in 2019 to P23.3 billion.
