The National Bureau of Investigation Human Trafficking Division (NBI-HTRAD) arrested a 51-year-old midwife named "Nancy" who sold a baby for P25,000 in Muntinlupa. The authorities immediately took the baby and arrested the suspect.
It turns out that the midwife's transaction was an NBI undercover agent, according to the suspect, the mother who gave birth left the baby with her so she just sold it. According to the NBI, this modus operandi is rampant online, where children are offered in private groups on social media.
"According to the Cyber-TIP of the Department of Justice (DOJ), there are many people who sell newborn children or adoptions who do not go through the regular process required by law," the NBI stated.
It is said that the suspect used to work at the lying in clinic and it is also being investigated if she was previously involved in the sale of babies. The authorities are also looking for who is the real mother of the baby that was turned over to the DSWD.
The NBI is holding a suspect who has been charged with multiple complaints including the perpetrator for violation of the Section 4(g) RA 9208 as amended by RA 10364 and RA 11862 also known as the "Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Child Trafficking under RA 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act in relation to RA 10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act.
Authorities warn the public that the abandonment and sale of children is strictly prohibited. If a person wants to adopt, it is better to go through the legal and correct process to protect the rights of the children.
"The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts of the government to combat human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable members of the society,” the DOJ said.
