According to the report of Land Transportation Office (LTO), up to 8,000 new motorcycles were bought by Filipinos a day which 40 percent end up in Metro Manila streets. While, the Philippine National Police (PNP) pact to check vehicles used for crimes.
Based on the data of Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department, Philippines had a total of 11.6 million motor vehicles registered with the LTO in 2018 where 62 percent or 7.2 million are motorcycles.
LTO chief Asec. Vigor Mendoza II said, "We are talking about 160,000 new motorcycles a month being added to our streets,” which include motorcycles with side cars (tricycles) for hire and non-conventional motorcycles.
After the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has launched a pilot study allowing the operation of motorcycles for the transportation of passengers and goods including parcels and mail, the number of motorcycles in the Philippines has steadily increased since 2019.
On the other hand, the elements of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group will soon have instant access to the LTO database to check if a vehicle has been used in a crime.
Under the data-sharing deal, the LTO would develop a verification facility, which will enable personnel of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) to verify information pertaining to motor vehicles that are “alarmed” or under investigation.
It would also facilitate the deployment of an authorized HPG personnel to the LTO command center on an interim basis, to verify motor vehicle registration records. “This agreement solidifies the existing PNP-LTO partnership on law enforcement and eventually ensures President Marcos’ commitment to improved peace and order situation.”
According to Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, “This agreement is a testament to the necessity of embracing technological innovations in the government’s efforts to make sure that every citizen is safe whether they are on the street or in their homes.”
“With criminals going digital nowadays, the PNP and the entire government law enforcement machinery must be one step ahead to become effective and efficient in crime prevention,” it added.
