After 77 years of covering weekly news, the Baguio Midland Courrier will cease its operation as the longest-running English community newspaper in Northern Luzon and cornerstone of the Cordillera region effective July 22.
Baguio Midland Courier released in a statement, “the community newspaper was not spared from the worldwide trend that newspapers are facing unprecedented challenges.”
“The decision to cease publication was a difficult one, and the management deeply regrets any impact this may have on our esteemed readers, newsboys, supporters, contributors, and advertisers,” read the notice.
Among Baguio's weekly newspapers, Midland Courier has the largest circulation, however due to its struggles with excessive production expenses, Baguio's only daily newspaper, SunStar Baguio, was forced to close in 2021 the second year of the COVID-19 epidemic.
On April 28, 1947, the Baguio Midland Courier's first four-page issue was published. The son of an Ibaloi woman and a Japanese immigrant, Sinai Hamada is a journalist and lawyer who established it. He was the Philippine Collegian's editor.
“The mission of its founding editors has always been to [be] ‘Fair, Fearless, Friendly and Free’ (which runs above the newspaper’s masthead) while delivering trustworthy and relevant news and information in this northern part of the country and in faraway lands reached by its online platforms,” the local newspaper said.
“While the print edition of the Baguio Midland Courier will no longer be in circulation, we encourage you to stay connected with us through any means possible, as we are hopeful that new opportunities will arise, allowing us to continue our mission in different forms,” it aded.
In its remaining three issues on July 7th, 14th and 21st, it invites advertisers and the newspaper’s supporters “to publish your messages, advertisements, advertorials, and infomercials.”
