A brownout is looming in the Luzon grid today April 16, 19 power plants are on forced outage, so from 1 pm to 11 pm, a yellow alert or thin reserve and a red alert or thin supply of electricity will be implemented in the Luzon grid.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), a series of rotating power interruptions are possible in different areas in Luzon. That's why NGCP reminded, "the activities that we can skip like ironing or doing laundry, those that can be done anytime. We can postpone on the weekend when the demand or use of electricity is low.”
“Here in Luzon, it's a bit worrying because there are more forced plant outages or unplanned ones, than scheduled plants,” it added.
The Meralco assured the public that they are ready in case a manual low dropping or rotating power interruption is needed. Meralco’s monitoring the situation after NGCP announced the red alert and yellow alert on Luzon grid.
In Visayas 12 power plants are on unscheduled shutdown, a yellow alert will also be put from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 to 7 pm by the NGCP. A yellow alert doesn’t necessarily lead to power outage but is declared when the transmission grid’s contingency requirement wasn’t meet by the operating margin.
On the other hand, red alert is issued when the transmission grid’s operational requirements cannot be fully met, and the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand.
