President Bongbong Marcos formed a new human rights committee but other groups stated that it is no longer necessary. To strengthen the protection of human rights in the country, President Bongbong Marcos ordered the formation of a super body or committee.
Under Administrative Order No. 22 that will be called the Special Committee on Human Rights Coordination, said it will continue the initiatives of the United Nations Joint Program on Human Rights when it comes to law enforcement, criminal justice, and policy making.
It will be led by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, co-chairperson is Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, and members of the secretaries of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Interior Local Government.
The duties of the special committee include conducting investigations and gathering information on whether human rights have been violated by law enforcement agencies. Also, the implementation of the human rights-based approach to illegal drugs and counter terrorism.
For the human rights watch, the committee's goal is good to fix the situation of human rights in the country, but they criticized those who will form such a super body.
"The United Nations has nothing to do, the CHR has no participation in this and will only be optional. The committee is composed of government agencies that have a poor record when it comes to accountability for human rights abuses," the group stated.
“If Marcos Jr. is truly sincere in the promotion and protection of human rights, his administration should start by abolishing the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict the main government machinery created by his disgraced predecessor that promotes and enables the massive and grave violation of human rights in the country these past years and until now,” Zarate said.
Similar remarks were made by Bayan Muna executive vice president Carlos Isagani Zarate, who stated that "this committee is just another bureaucratic layer to make the Marcos Jr. administration acceptable in the community of nations where human rights are of paramount concern."
