In some places in Luzon and Visayas it is possible to experience 42-43°C. PAGASA warns to prepare for the peak of summer especially in May. As recently as April, some areas in the country have exceeded PAGASA's extreme temperature forecast. The peak of summer is still in May, so the weather may be even hotter.
"As early as April, we have already felt that it is possible that the maximum daytime temperature will exceed 40°. The heat index depends on the person's discomfort level, it varies but the maximum daytime temperature is what the instruments record,” Ana Liza Solis of PAGASA stated.
So PAGASA said there is a 50/50 chance that the maximum daytime temperature will reach 42.2° in the next month. PAGASA is currently studying this and will provide an update next week.
This is just the maximum daytime temperature, not the heat index or the heat that can be felt, which may be higher than the recorded temperature. In addition, heat cannot escape to the atmosphere on a cloudy evening, therefore it will remain trapped close to the ground. It will be warmer the next day because of this combination, according to Solis.
The urban heat island effect, which causes temperatures to rise due to an abundance of concrete, steel, glass, and other structures that both store and radiate more heat, is another thing that urban residents need to be aware of.
