The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has laid out alternative routes for affected motorcycles after announcing that they will be prohibited from passing through the service road of the EDSA Kamuning area starting today, May 3.
Because it appears from their monitoring that up to 23,000 motorcycle riders pass through the service road every day, so if they can reduce the volume of vehicles in the EDSA Kamuning area, the MMDA hopes that this will add to the easing of traffic flow.
The southbound lane of the EDSA Kamuning flyover in Quezon City is closed to private motorists for the third day for the retrofitting of the bridge, the only part of the flyover that will remain open is the EDSA bus way. Because of this, the private vehicles below are crowded, more problematic for motorcycle riders whose usual route is the service road of EDSA Kamuning.
Starting today, only four wheeler vehicles will be allowed to pass through the service road to reduce severe traffic congestion in the area.
"In our count 24,000 four wheel vehicles pass through the Kamuning flyover and 23,000 motorcycles. So, the 23,000 motorcycles can used all any alternative routes," MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Romano Artes stated.
The MMDA said that the motorcycle riders who pass through it will not be ticketed but will only be guided out of EDSA for alternative routes.
According to the DPWH, the repair of the flyover is expected to take five months. The agency explained that this is just one of the fourteen bridges and flyovers in Metro Manila identified by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) that need to be repaired in preparation for a strong earthquake or "The Big One."
For motorists and riders, the cycle is far away and it's a hassle when going through alternative routes so they can't do anything but endure the traffic on EDSA.
