A habal-habal passenger died after falling off a motorcycle and being run over by a bus on the EDSA Busway near North Avenue Station in Quezon City. Any motorcycle or vehicle is prohibited from passing through the EDSA carousel because it is only for buses.
The motorcycle driver sustained injuries after crashing and rolling. According to him, they were about to make a U-turn so he entered the EDSA busway. He said he was in a hurry so they were on the northbound and would have moved to southbound EDSA.
According to the rider, he knew it was illegal to make a U-turn there but he tried anyway until the bus hit them and the victim fell and was pinned by the bus tire.
The passenger jumped and was run over and went under the bus, authorities found a gun and a magazine with bullets next to the victim's body, complete with documents and permits. The bus had to be lifted slightly to remove the victim's body.
According to the bus driver who hit the motorcycle, the motorcycle suddenly appeared on the busway to make a U-turn. He said he tried to brake but didn’t make it. The motorcycle and bus drivers are in the custody of police that will face reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
Rescuers immediately responded to the scene of the accident. In the statement of Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation, the tragic incident at the EDSA busway resulting to the death of a motorcycle rider after crashing against a passenger bus, underscores the critical consequences of failing to respect the Busway’s safety regulations.
“The public is again reminded that the EDSA Busway is reserved exclusively for buses. Violators not only endanger themselves but also the safety of others,” it said.
