MORE THAN 200,000 JOB OPPORTUNITY ON LABOR DAY
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will offer more than 200,000 jobs nationwide on Labor Day, but for some labor groups, the workers need the passage of P150 wage hike proposal that is still pending in the House of Representatives.
In a study, P1,207 is the average family living wage for a family which is far from the P610 daily minimum wage in Manila. Although the proposal for a P100 wage hike has been passed in the Senate, proposal for a P150 to P750 wage increase are still being studied at the committee level of the chamber.

"With rising inflation, the wage gap has been growing wider because the wage increases of regional wage boards are so infrequent and so small that worker wages aren't keeping up with inflation, nor even with increasing productivity,’ a group said calling out for living wage.
Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said that implementing a legislated wage hike should be well studies, and the capacity of small or big employers should be considered too. Wage adjustments will result to distortion forcing employers to adjust other wage levels.
Extensive job fairs will be held in 95 places across the country on May 1 and will offer more than 200,000 job vacancies. Most needed are production workers, customer service representatives, baggers, cashiers, sales clerks, laborers and service crew.
The registration of application is still in philjobnet, along with the job fair, Kadiwa program, TESDA training, livelihood, and TUPAD payouts for those who have been given emergency employment due to El Niño will be available.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the last time the government was able to offer this number of jobs was in 2019. This is almost triple the job vacancies offered during the same event in 2023, the agency said with 2,400 participating employers.
