Around 7:51 on Thursday night, blazing fire hit a four-storey warehouse building in Guidote Street Barangay 132 in Balut Tondo Manila that reached the second alarm. Firefighters have been battling to extinguished the fire for more than 12 hours since the fire started.
Minutes after the fire flare up, the first alarm was immediately raised around 8:01 p.m. and it was later raised to the second alarm by 8:14 p.m. Eleven in the morning on Friday, the building was still on fire spewing thick dark smoke. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) the origin of the fire is still unknown.
The BFP confirmed that a total of 15 fire volunteers suffered in minor injuries and burns in the different parts of their bodies and had difficulty in breathing in extinguishing the fire. The injured firefighters were immediately brought to different hospitals for medical attention.
According to some of the injured fire volunteers, a fire suddenly broke out inside the warehouse while they were inside it causing to have burns on the faces and arms of the responders. Aside from this, they also lack of equipment’s protection while putting the fire out.
Due to the situation, firefighters had to wear breathing apparatus when entering the warehouse and one of the fire volunteers said that there was zero-visibility inside the burning structure.
The contents of the warehouse contained different types of materials such as plastic, cardboard, and electrical tools, so the firemen had a hard time putting out the fire. According to BFP, the fire started on the second floor of the warehouse and it is a confined fire which means the fire is just inside the warehouse.
Authorities initially said that the fire damage to property costs already reached almost P20 million.
