The expanded number coding scheme will be suspended on some days during the Christmas and New Year season, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Wednesday.
The MMDA said number coding will be suspended on Christmas Eve (December 24), Christmas Day (December 25), Rizal Day (December 30), Last day of the year (December 31), and New Year’s Day (January 01).
December 25, 30, and January 1 are regular holidays, while December 24 and 31 are special non-working holidays. The MMDA said there are now more cars on the road as people rush to go on vacation and celebrate Christmas.
The number coding scheme corresponds to the following days: 1 and 2 for Monday, 3 and 4 for Tuesday, 5 and 6 for Wednesday, 7 and 8 for Thursday, and 9 and 0 for Friday. There is no number coding scheme on Saturdays and Sundays.
“Wherever your destination is, always remember to plan your trip, follow traffic laws, and drive safely,” the agency advised motorists.
Additionally, the MMDA convened members of the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) to discuss measures and contingency plans for emergency situations during the holiday season.
The MMDA and MMDRRMC have developed a comprehensive plan to ensure that residents of the National Capital Region are prepared for potential disasters during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
MMDRRMC head and concurrent MMDA chief Don Artes, focused on potential disasters such as fires and heavy rainfall during this festive period. As a precaution, the operation center will be raised to Blue Alert from 8 a.m. on December 23 until 8 a.m. on January 6, 2025.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) earlier said that it expected the holiday road, terminal and port congestion to last until mid-January 2025, with around 7 million passengers trooping to various gateways across the Philippines. 3 million passengers are expected to go to Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) and 4 million to go to piers, ports, seaports.
