The Metropolitan Manila and Development Authority (MMDA) held its Road to Zero Waste Expo which meant to promote a circular economy model and a cleaner metropolis together with other stakeholders from the government, academe, and private sector.
The expo, part of its 10-Year Road to Zero Waste Program campaign that seeks to cultivate a culture of sustainable waste management, aims to enhance public awareness in waste diversion through a series of impactful activities for Metro Manila.
MMDA data showed that in Metro Manila, there is an approximately 11, 000 kilograms of waste generated every day. With the increasing population in Metro Manila of 14, 492,000 in 2024 and a dense landscape of 636 kilometers of land area, the National Capital Region (NCR) is experiencing an unprecedented challenge both to the environment and the economy.
MMDA projects that for 2025, there will be a total waste generation rate of 13,310,622 kilograms per day or 4,668,592 tons per year. “Our problem, the increasing waste generation with low waste diversion rates, limiting the lifespan of our sanitary landfills in out 3 remaining sites,” MMDA general manager Procopio Lipana said.
According to MMDA’s waste analysis and characterization study conducted in 2023, the primary sources of waste in Metro Manila include…household waste (35. 78%), commercial waste (24.15%) including markets with compostable waste (58%), industrial waste (17.19%), and institutional waste (11.17%).
MMDA chairman Romando Artes said the agency wants to elevate its zero waste campaign through holistic approaches to cultivate a culture of sustainable waste management in the metropolis.
“With the implementation of solid waste management-related interventions that the MMDA is currently pursuing in cooperation with the local government units and private sector, we will be able to achieve a Clean Metro Manila at the soonest possible time,” Artes said.
Lipana said a cleaner Metro Manila can be achieved by advocating for waste reduction practices. “To reach our targets, we hope that all stakeholders work together to create a unified and functional system and infrastructures, create partnerships and match businesses, and strategize on mapping out waste diversion points with our waste recyclers.”
