President Bongbong Marcos Jr. is urging the Department of Education to bring back the old academic calendar by 2025 because of cancellations of face-to-face classes due to hot weather which would be better for the children. This is after the DepEd recommended the revert of school year to the President.
"Everyday, you turn on the news face-to-face classes are canceled, face-to-face classes have been postponed etc. So it's really necessary. So yes, that's part of the plan, that we're trying to do to bring it back already to the old schedule,” PBBM stated.
"I asked DepEd for that and I asked Inday Sara to give me already a concerted plan because it looks like we don't need to wait any longer and it looks like it is necessary. I don't see any objections really from anyone especially with the El Niño being what it is,” he added.
Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte had previously stated that conversations had been held on the subject in the midst of calls to shorten the transition period for the current school year. She also emphasized the importance of respecting teachers' and students' breaks.
"We cannot compromise on the rest of our teachers and our learners, because classes cannot be direct because not only teachers need rest, but also the students,” Duterte said.
DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas response stated, “In our letter to OP regarding DepEd’s proposal for reversion to June-March SY, we already stated that we commit to abide by the President’s decision on the matter. The same statement I made during the Senate hearing last April 30.”
To gradually shift back to the old school calendar, DepEd set the end of the academic year earlier than scheduled on May 31, 2024 for the 2023-2024 school year, with April-May as the summer vacation.
