MANDATORY EVACUATION UP AS THE SEISMIC ACTIVITY AT KANLAON VOLCANO HEIGHTENED

The City Government of Canlaon in Negros Oriental released an order for mandatory evacuation of residents within the 4 kilometer permanent danger zone amid increased volcanic unrest of Mt. Kanlaon.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has reported an increase in seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano with the risk of a possible eruption that could endanger lives and properties.
Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) is currently in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, and the volcanic activity may lead to pyroclastic flows, ashfall,, and other hazards, posing an immediate threat to residents within the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
PHIVOLCS has also recorded 337 volcanic earthquakes from Mt. Kanlaon over a 24-hour period and the highest sulfur dioxide emission with an averaged 9,985 tons/day that reach 1,000-meter high plume which blew in a southeast direction.
With the current situation, immediate mandatory evacuation was ordered by the Canlaon government for residents living within the 4-kilometer PDZ. The Canlaon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) was tasked to facilitate the safe and orderly transfer of residents to the designated evacuation centers.
“The LGU will provide food, water, medicines, and other necessities at these centers. The LGU, in coordination with the barangay officials and other relevant agencies, shall provide transportation and necessary assistance for the evacuation of affected residents. Priority will be given to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, children, and other vulnerable individuals,” the Executive Order No. 63, Series of 2024 reads.
According to a report, as of Tuesday, some 88 families or 248 individuals from Barangays Masulog, Malaiba, and Pula have been evacuated in three different public high schools for their temporary shelter.
