Yellow alert has been raised in the Luzon Grid on Wednesday afternoon to evening. According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) this is due to limited supply after two power plants tripped.
The yellow alert will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. where power supply can still meet demand, but it will serve as a warning that when a plant breaks down one way or another, it will result in brownouts.
The power firm said that a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. Luzon grid has an available capacity of 12,969 megawatts (MW) while the peak demand reached 11,768 MW.
cited factors contributing to the raise of yellow alert in Luzon grid, Sual U2 tripped at 7:41 a.m. due to possible boiler tube leak; and GNPD U2 will start to ramp down at 11 a.m. and target emergency shutdown at 1 p.m., due to boiler tube leak.
“Seven plants have been on forced outage since January to May 2024, and 10 power plants between June and July 2024; while five are running on derated capacities, for a total of 3,017.9MW unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.
Visayas and Mindanao grids are under normal condition, the grid operator said.
