The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that five stations of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension will open to the public this November, “as an early Christmas gift of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration to train commuters.”
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said this would open in the next two to three weeks possibly on the 16th of November. Five stations make up Phase 1 of the project are: Redemptorist Station, MIA Station, Asia World (PITX) Station, Ninoy Aquino Station, and Dr. Santos (Sucat) Station.
“We hope that this opening of the extension of LRT-1 will help alleviate traffic as it will be able to support thousands of passengers. This will be our early Christmas gift to the residents of the area,” Bautista said.
The first phase new stations will run for 6.7 kilometers making the railway's alignment by 26 kilometers in total. It will connect Baclaran Station in Pasay City to Dr. Santos Station in Parañaque City, reducing travel time by 30 minutes and serve an additional 80,000 passengers daily.
Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) President Enrico Benipayo said they will retain the status quo on fares per kilometer. Commuters taking the full 26-kilometer stretch of LRT1 from Fernando Poe Jr. to Dr. Santos Station would be charged around P45.
This is an additional P10 from the previous P35 for passengers taking the train from Fernando Poe Jr. to the Baclaran station. The additional stations and expanded reach aim to ease congestion along busy routes, providing a faster commuting option for thousands of daily passengers in southern Metro Manila.
“We are also very much excited to open the line. Again within this month, surely within the month of November we will be able to serve an extended area of the metropolis. Five additional stations, six kilometers, and this will allow people to traverse the alignment within a span of less than an hour,” Benipayo said.
