President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has proclaimed August 23, 2024 (Friday) a special non-working holiday in observance of Ninoy Aquino Day which was moved from August 21, 2024 (Wednesday).
The Malacañang issued Proclamation No.665 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin that Marcos moved the special non-working holiday for a longer weekend that would promote domestic tourism.
Amending Proclamation No. 368 S. 2023 declaring the regular holidays and special (non-working) days for the year 2024. Whereas, RA No. 9492 provides that Ninoy Aquino Day may be celebrated on the Monday nearest August 21 unless modified by law or proclamation.
“In order to provide for a longer weekend thereby promoting domestic tourism, the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day may be moved from 21 August 2024 (Wednesday) to 23 August 2024 (Friday), provided that the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino Day is maintained,” the proclamation reads.
“Now, therefore, I, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Friday, 23 August 2024, as special (non-working) day throughout the country.”
The proclamation was signed and done on August 15, 2024 in the City of Manila.
Marcos then ordered the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to release the necessary circular so that the proclamation could be applied to the private sector. The public can now enjoy a four-day weekend as August 26 (Monday) is a regular non-working holiday for National Heroes' Day.
