After the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA 3) experienced issues with its 20-year-old baggage handling system leading to passengers with delayed baggage, Cebu Pacific said normal baggage handling operations have been restored.
Hundreds of pieces of luggage were left stranded at the airport even after their owners had already departed and arrived at their destinations since October 21 according to the Gokongwei-led airline.
Cebu Pacific reported that the baggage handling issue affected 400 out of 65,000 passengers who flew on October 20.
Cebu Pacific said that 90 percent of the previously left-behind bags have been recovered and that the company aimed to swiftly deliver any remaining delayed luggage to affected passengers.
"We want to assure all passengers that checked baggage for new travel is now being processed as usual. We extend our sincere gratitude to the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) for their crucial collaboration in resolving the issue. Their dedicated efforts played a key role in restoring operations,” the airline said.
NNIC earlier said that the incident showed "the urgent need to upgrade NAIA’s aging infrastructure." Cebu Pacific is also optimistic about NNIC’s ongoing commitment to enhancing airport infrastructure and making further improvements.
The San Miguel Corp-led consortium mentioned that it will replace the 20-year-old baggage handling system and has already procured a new, advanced system, with additional redundancy measures set to be implemented to prevent future disruptions and enhance operational efficiency.
