LANDSLIDE BURIES VILLAGE IN BATANGAS; 18 DEAD

As authorities continue their search and rescue operation in a village at Talisay Batangas that was buried in thick mud from the mountains brought by heavy rains during the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, four more bodies were recovered bringing the death toll to 18.

 

Batangas police director Col. Jacinto Malinao said that at least 18 people are confirmed dead and two remain missing in Purok B, Barangay Sampaloc, the fatalities include 12 minors.

 

Several houses were buried when a part of the hill surrounding the village collapsed, sending mud and boulders cascading down the houses. Witnesses said the landslide happened very fast and some of the residents were unable to escape. 

 

In Talisay, 311 families or 1,457 individuals are staying in evacuation centers around Talisay.

 

Talisay Mayor Nestor Natanauan said in a Facebook post, “Talisay was very much affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. In its two-day onslaught, there was flooding and landslides in several barangays. At present, we are monitoring the affected individuals and families, as well as the ongoing operations for the missing persons and the homes that got buried in the landslide.”

 

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that 133 houses were totally damaged while 567 were partially damaged in the entire province of Batangas. And over 5,000 families or 17,700 individuals were in 266 evacuation centers and another 1,402 families were staying outside evacuation centers. 

 

14 others in the province of Batangas were reported dead, 10 were missing and 3 injured.Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas said that they would declare a state of calamity.
