In celebration of Labor Day, to honor and recognize the labor movements and works of contributions of laborers in the Philippines, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced that it will offer free rides on Wednesday May 1.
This year Labor Day theme focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate. Laborers just need to present their company ID or government-issued ID for those 18 and above in Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT2) and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT 3). Free rides in both rail services will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
The Labor Day aims to honor all of the diligent workers in the Philippines. Prior to being declared a national holiday, the Philippine Assembly lobbied for it as a bill in April 1908. On May 1, 1903, the inaugural Congreso Obrero de Filipinas labor organization was established, marking the occasion's first celebration. During the then-American-led government, thousands of workers demanded better working conditions.
LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera said that, “While we are incapable of giving something that is equal to your sacrifices and contributions, we wish to make you feel our gratitude through these free rides.”
“Their sacrifices is our inspiration to improve our services. We are proud, thankful, and we salute all Filipino workers,” MRT-3 officer in charge, Assistant Secretary Jorjette Aquino stated.
On the other hand, the number coding scheme will be suspended on Labor Day, with vehicles license plates ending in 5 and 6 on Wednesday. Motorists are advised to plan their trips ahead, and always observe road courtesy, and obey traffic rules and regulations.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said in an advisory, “The implementation of expanded number coding scheme is suspended on Wednesday, May 1, Labor Day.”
