President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to work closely in providing a higher Service Recognition Incentive (SRI) for over 1 million public school teachers this year.
According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), the government aims to increase the SRI of an estimated 1,011,800 DepEd personnel from the current PHP18,000 to PHP20,000. “Recognizing the crucial role of teachers in molding the Filipino youth.”
Marcos ordered both agencies to explore budgetary measures to guarantee that the SRI increase for DepEd personnel can be enforced while remaining mindful of the fiscal responsibilities.
SRI is an annual financial incentive granted to government employees in recognition of their commitment and dedication to delivering high-quality, responsive public service. The PCO said the implementation timeline and the establishment of the funding mechanisms for the initiative were underway.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara thanked the President for his directive, describing it as a morale booster for educators. “This initiative underscores our shared goal of empowering teachers and reinforcing their critical role in shaping the future of Filipino learners.”
On the other hand, the DBM said that it was already working to execute the order. “In compliance with the President's directive, I have immediately instructed relevant bureaus in the DBM to study appropriate measures to swiftly implement this increase while taking into consideration our fiscal limitations and responsibilities.”
Meanwhile, the Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) lauded Marcos’ decision and reiterated its call for a P15,000 across-the-board salary increase for teachers and education workers. “Ensuring that our teachers receive just compensation reflective of their pivotal role in nation-building will further strengthen their commitment and ability to deliver quality education.”
“We anticipate concrete actions that will uplift the dignity of the teaching profession and secure a brighter future for our learners and the nation in general,” said TDC National Chairperson Benjo.
