HALF OF FILIPINOS AGAINST LEGALIZATION OF DIVORCE – OCTA SURVEY
More than half of the population of Filipino adults (57%) were opposed to legalizing divorce in the Philippines based on the latest survey of OCTA Research. The “Absolute Divorce Act” was passed for its third and final reading by the House of Representatives.
OCTA’s second-quarter survey was conducted among 1,200 Filipino adults using face-to-face interviews from June 26 to July 1. The result shows that 57 percent of the respondents do not support passing the law to legalize divorce in the country, which was higher from the 51% recorded in the survey year 2023.

While, 39 percent were in favor of legalizing divorce and 4 percent were undecided on the matter. The highest percentage of Filipinos who do not support legalization of divorce was recorded in Balance Luzon at 61 percent. Followed by Mindanao with 57 percent, National Capital Region (NCR) with 50 percent and the Visayas with 49 percent.
Divorce legalization has the highest support in Visayas at 50%, followed by Metro Manila at 46%, Mindanao at 35%, and Balanced Luzon at 35%. In terms of socioeconomic classes, Class ABC with 53 percent had the highest support for the proposal, while opposition were highest in Class D and E at 58 percent.
Candidates that promote the legalization of the issue will not be voted by adult Filipinos based on the survey, while 39 percent will vote for such a candidate. 94 percent of Filipinos that supports divorce legalization agree that married couples who have already separated and cannot reconcile should be allowed to divorce so they can legally remarry.
While 95 percent said that divorce should be available for spouses who were abused or subjected to violence. And 96 percent agrees that couples who have been living separately for an extended period without reconciliation should be allowed to divorce.
